What TrustCheck does
TrustCheck is a Chrome extension that helps you assess whether online claims are credible before you believe, share, or act on them. When you highlight a claim and submit it for checking, your selected text and limited page context are sent to TrustCheck's backend for analysis. The backend may forward the content to an AI provider to generate a credibility assessment.
What data is processed
When you submit a claim for checking, TrustCheck processes the following:
- Selected claim text — the text you highlighted on the webpage.
- Page URL, domain, and title — basic context about where the claim appeared.
- AI and evidence providers — Selected claim text and limited page context may be shared with third-party service providers used to generate credibility analysis and retrieve supporting evidence. These providers process the information only as necessary to provide TrustCheck's functionality and are subject to their own applicable privacy and data-processing terms.
- Local browser storage — TrustCheck stores recent-check history, usage counters, Proof Receipt metadata, and extension preferences locally in your browser. Separately, when you submit a claim for analysis, TrustCheck's backend may store the resulting assessment, evidence records, and related proof metadata for service operation, traceability, reliability, and product improvement.
Browsing activity
TrustCheck does not continuously monitor browsing activity or collect a user's general browsing history. Page information is accessed only after the user explicitly initiates a TrustCheck analysis.
What you should not submit
Do not use TrustCheck to check passwords, private messages, confidential documents, medical records, or any sensitive personal information. Selected text is sent to TrustCheck's backend and AI provider for analysis. Only submit claims you would be comfortable sharing externally.
API keys
API keys are never exposed in the extension. All AI processing happens through TrustCheck's backend, not directly from your browser. The extension does not contain or transmit any API credentials.
Service providers
TrustCheck relies on third-party infrastructure, AI, and evidence-retrieval providers to operate the service. Information is shared with these providers only where necessary to perform a user-requested analysis, operate the service, or maintain its reliability.
Data retention
TrustCheck may retain submitted claims, assessment results, retrieved evidence, technical logs, feedback, and Proof Receipt information for the period reasonably necessary to operate, secure, troubleshoot, and improve the service. Retention practices may change as the beta develops.
Private beta limitation
TrustCheck is currently in private beta. During this period, usage data, assessment logs, and feedback may be reviewed by the TrustCheck team to improve the product. TrustCheck does not sell users' personal data. Information may be shared with service providers only where necessary to operate TrustCheck and provide user-requested analyses.
Beta results may be imperfect. Please use the Useful / Not useful feedback buttons inside the extension to help improve assessments.
